PURPOSE:To obtain the subject substantially straight-chain polymer, useful as electrical and electronic materials and excellent in electrical characteristics, etc., by carrying out oxidative coupling polymerization of diphenyl disulfides and thiophenols in the presence of an acid under pressure using a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective polyarylene sulfide is obtained by polymerizing diphenyl disulfides expressed by formula I (R<1> to R<8> are H, halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy) and/or thiophenols expressed by formula II (R<9> to R<12> are same as R<1> to R<8>) in the presence of a protonic acid (preferably sulfuric acid, trifluoroacetic acid, etc.) or a proton donative substance (preferably acetic anhydride, etc.) using preferably a vanadium-based catalyst, preferably at 0-60 deg.C under a pressure of >=2.5 kg/cm<2> oxygen partial pressure. |
