PURPOSE:To allow the displaying of a perfectly black color by including a 2nd liquid crystal layer in which liquid crystalmolecules are so oriented spirally as to be in the direction reverse from the orienting direction of the liquid crystal components of a 1st liquid crystal layer in a 2nd liquid crystal element. CONSTITUTION:The transmitted light made into ellipitcally polarized light by transmitting the liquid crystal layer 29 not impressed with a voltage is subjected to the polarization effect in the reverse direction by the liquid crystal molecules oriented in the direction reverse from the direction of the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer 29. Further, the extraordinary light component and ordinary light component of the incident polarized light on the liquid crystal layer 33 from the liquid crystal layer 29 are alternated with each other as the liquid crystal molecules in extreme proximity to each other are so disposed as to intersect orthogonally with each other. The elliptically polarized light is thereby offset and is reset to linearly polarized light. Then, the light transmitting the region where segment electrodes 26 are not formed and the region corresponding to the segment electrodes 26 not impressed with the voltage is completely shut off by the liquid crystal element 23 for repair. The perfectly black color free from coloration is displayed as a background color in this way.
