The invention relates to a method for increasing the biodegradability of C1-C10 esters of cellulose having a DS/AGU of 1.5 to 2.7 and an inherent viscosity of 0.2 to 3.0 deciliters/gram as measured at a temperature of 25 DEG C for a 0.5 g sample in 100 ml of a 60/40 parts by weight solution of phenol/tetrachloroethane comprising contacting said C1-C10 ester of cellulose with 0.1-40 % by weight of hydrophilic modifier or a hydrolysis promoter or a combination thereof. The invention also relates to shaped articles prepared by the above process.
