The package for foodstuffs comprises two sheets (14, 15) made of flexible material defining between them a series of containers (13) housing a chemical substance having the property of expanding in the presence of water and of retaining a quantity of water distinctly greater than its weight. The containers (13) are separated from each other by zones in which the two sheets are applied against one another, these zones comprising openings (16) allowing the passage of an aqueous liquid released by the foodstuff contained in the package, the sheet (14) intended to come into contact with the foodstuff being impermeable with respect to the said aqueous liquid and the sheet (15) being permeable with respect to the latter.
