The mechanism adjusts the length of a car safety belt. The latter is unwound from a coiling body against a spring force after pressing a release button, while the spring automatically rewinds the belt. The coiling body (6) engages positively a locking member (16) released by the button (17). The member can have first teeth engaging between the button and body, and second ones engaging between the button and frame. The first teeth are released on pressing the button, which cannot turn in the frame.
