A pyrotechnic compsn. consists of (A) a light metal powder, pref. Mg powder, as metallic reductant, (B) KNO3 opt. together with KClO4 as main oxidant, (C) CaCO3, KHCO3, NaHCO3, K2CO3 and/or Na2CO3 as additional oxidant, (D) N-splitting substances as combustion moderator and (E) KCl as sublimable and/or NaCl as evaporatable, non-toxic fog forming material. (D) is pref. azodicarbonamide, oxamide or dicyandiamide. The mixt. is pref. packed into a cartridge provided with a primer, suitably having the same compsn. as the above except for (D), at one end.
