Recovery of daunorubicin.HCl (I) from fermentation broths is effected by extracting the broth with a water-immiscible solvent, evaporating the extract, pptg. crude (I), chromatographing this on a silica gel column with HCOOH/CHCl3/MeOH, evaporating the (I)-contg. fractions, and opt. recrystallising the prod. Pref. the broth is filtered and extd. with n-BuOH under weakly alkaline conditions. Crude (I) is ppted. with HCl. Elution is effected with CHCl3/MeOH (80:20 to 90:10) contg. 0.2-2 vol.% HCOOH.
