An encoding system (1) contains a code carrier (3) exhibiting at least one identification characteristic (2) and a detection device (4) which reads the characteristic. The identification characteristic is used to activate or operate one or more devices. The identification characteristic can be automatically and contactlessly, e.g., electromagnetically or optically, read by the detection device. It may be a bar code. The detection device can be a laser reader for optically detectable markings.
