Acylaminomethanephosphonic acid and acylaminomethanephosphinic acids of formula (I): R<2>-CO-NH-CH2-P(O)(OH)R<1>, wherein R<1> stands for hydroxy, C1-C4 alkyl or phenyl and R<2> stands for C1-C6 alkyl, benzyl or phenyl, which is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more residues chosen from the group consisting of C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy and halogen, are useful intermediate products in the preparation of biologically active compounds. They can be prepared by reacting a compound of formula (II): R<2>-CO-NH-CH2-OH with compounds of formula (III): H-P(O)(OH)R<1> in the presence of at least equimolar quantities referred to the compound of formula (II) of acetic anhydride. The compounds of formula (I) in which R<1> is not hydroxy are new.
