The mechanical connector for attaching a component, for example a socket outlet, to a conductor trunking (25) has a flat base (1). The base can be a component mounting plate or part of the component. A rotatable assembly (2) turns two plates (2.1, 2.2) which are joined through hooks and slots (14, 15) and are acted upon by a spring (13). The lower plate (2.1) has a tapered spiral groove on the underside. Linked with the groove is the upper end (6, 8) of a Z-shaped hook whose lower end (5) engages in a T-shaped channel (19) on the back of the trunking (25). When the assembly (2) is turned, for example through a screwdriver slot (24), the end (8) of the hook is pressed down by the tapered groove thus lifting its free end (5) which then clamps the base (1) against the trunking channel. The spring (13) compensates for manufacturing tolerances in the assembly (2).
