Gearwheel shaped tool for the fine machining of the tooth faces of gear wheels. Machining is by rolling action of gear and tool while the tool is being fed-in towards the gear wheel. Gear wheel and tool run on axes which cross one another. The tooth faces of the tool have an abrasive surface which is not geometrically determined. The teeth of the tool are narrower than the width (L2) of the teeth of the gear wheel, so that each tooth only acts over part of the width of the teeth which are to be machined. The teeth on the tool are off-set from one another so that consecutive teeth cover the whole width of the teeth to be machined. USE/ADVANTAGE - Fine machining of the teeth of gearwheels is carried out over their whole width even when the teeth have form errors.
