A METHOD OF TREATING A BIODEGRADABLE MATERIAL

A method of treating a biodegradable material, for subsequent packaging or storage, comprising entraining an amount of oxygen in the material, which is sufficient to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of anaerobic microorganisms in, or on the material. Apparatus for treating a continuous flow of material is also described. The apparatus includes an upright column (1), which is arranged to carry a flow of biodegradable material and which has a porous section (6) through which oxygen can be introduced into the flow of material as a stream of fine bubbles. Undissolved oxygen is collected from a chamber (8) at the upper end of the column.
