<p>An educational device for aiding the development of reading and writing skills, comprising a plurality of symbol blocks each having an alphabetic symbol representing a predetermined consonant-vowel combination on at least one surface thereof and having associated with each surface bearing a symbol thereon a respective predetermined encoding means. Also provided is a casing containing a plurality of receptacles each for displaying a surface of a respective one of the symbol blocks inserted therein, and a plurality of decoding means within the casing each associated with a respective one of the receptacles and responsive to the encoding means of the symbol block inserted therein for generating a code corresponding to the alphabetic symbol appearing on the displayed surface of the symbol block. Each receptacle is scanned in turn at a preselected speed depending on the proficiency of the user, so as successively to couple a synthesizing means to each of the decoding means for synthesizing a sound corresponding to the alphabetic symbol represented by the code in response to the generated code. The resulting sound is reproduced audibly by an audio output means coupled to the voice synthesizing means. <IMAGE></p> |
