CONSTITUTION:Nd<3+> used as an active substance is added to a host glass consisting essentially of a fluoride to carry out amplification of light in 1.3mum wavelength band of functional multi-component glass. In this time, concentration of NaF or AlF3 in the above-mentioned multi-component glass is kept to an amount of >=3mol% and to the extent that the glass performance is not deteriorated. Thereby the functional multi-component glass enabling amplification of light in 1.3mum band is obtained. A core is formed using the above-mentioned glass and clad having refraction index lower than that of the core is provided to afford the optical fiber in which light is enclose, having extremely low light loss. As a result, the optical fiber enables application to light amplifier, etc., having high regain.
