PURPOSE:To shorten the operation time of retrieval by designating position information on a photograph as against a whole picture, executing a convolutional operation between a fuzzy mask generated based on the information and registered area information and outputting data from a larger evaluation value by the operation result. CONSTITUTION:In a retrieval processing, a desired retrieval condition is inputted from a keyboard 5. A fuzzy mask generation part 6 analyzes the retrieval condition and generates the fuzzy mask. The fuzzy mask is set based on fuzzy logic as a function which is in inverse proportion to a distance and which is converged to '0' with a desired designation point as 1.0. The convolutional operation is executed by the generated fuzzy mask and area information from an optical disk 4. An operation result is outputted to an evaluation judgement 8. Data are sorted in the order of the large evaluation value and higher N- number of the evaluation values are selected. The pictures corresponding to picture numbers equivalent to the N-number of the values are displayed in a display 10 in the order of the large value.
