The gear change device includes a front chain guide (15) and a rear control mechanism (14) for controlling a selective combination of a bicycle chain (13) with a number of chain wheels (12) on the bicycle pedal axis (7), and/or with a number of sprocket wheels (11) on a hub of the bicycle rear wheel (4). A first and a second electric motor (15a,14a) control the front chain guide and/or the rear control mechanism, sensors (15b,14b) determine the position of the front chain guide and the rear control mechanism, and manually operated activators (43,44) operate the first and/or second electric motor. The activators comprise a first and a second element for increasing or reducing the gear ratio, and an electronic control unit (30) is programmed to choose, in response to the activators, the front chain wheel and the rear sprocket wheel, with which the chain should be connected. The electronic control unit activates the electric motors accordingly, until the position sensors determine the right positioning of the chain.
