PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals and raw material for perfumery, agricultural chemicals, resins, etc., in high activity and selectivity by oxidizing furfural with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a specific compound. CONSTITUTION:2-Furancarboxylic acid can be produced by reacting 1mol of furfural with 1-2mol of hydrogen peroxide at normal temperature to 100 deg.C for 3-15hr in the presence of 0.1-3mol of an aromatic heterocyclic compound containing one or more nitrogen atoms in the ring (e.g. pyridine) and 0.0001-10g- atom (in terms of tungsten) of a tungsten-containing compound (e.g. tungstic acid). |
