PURPOSE:To efficiently produce the subject compound useful as an intermediate raw material for medicines and agricultural chemicals without causing corrosion of apparatuses or problems in purification of the diol by reacting cyclohexene oxide with water using an inorganic solid acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Cyclohexene oxide is reacted with water in the presence of an inorganic solid acid catalyst (e.g. silica, alumina or zeolite, especially montmorillonite catalyst is preferred) as a catalyst to provide cyclohexene-1,2- diol. When the inorganic solid acid is used, recovery and reuse of the catalyst is extremely facilitated without causing corrosion of apparatuses or problems in purification of the diol as opposed to use of mineral acids or organic acids. Thereby, the aforementioned method is industrially advantageous. |
