PURPOSE:To perform the management of a service life with high reliability by automatically performing the service life evaluation of an optical recording medium at every loading of the optical recording medium. CONSTITUTION:When an optical disk 1 is clamped and a device is started up, a controller 28 reads out program software for service life evaluation according to the procedure of program software for drive control stored in control software storage memory 29, and stores it in evaluation software storage memory 25. Thence, the measurement for the reproducing characteristic and recording characteristic of the optical disk 1 loaded according to the procedure of the program software for service life evaluation, etc., are performed, and the service life of the disk is evaluated by performing comparison with reference data stored in data memory 26, and the usage of the optical recording medium is limited when the service life goes less than the reference data. Thereby, the management of the service life for individual optical recording medium is performed. |
