Process for obtaining erythromycin 9-[O-[(2- methoxy)methyl] oxime] roxitromycin in which the reaction between erythromycin 9-oxime and a compound of formula CH3-O-CH2CH2-O-CH2-X (X is a projecting group with regard to nucleophilic substitution) is performed by shaking a solution of the two compounds in a water-immiscible organic solvent at ambient temperature with an aqueous solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst. Roxitromycin is a macrolid related to erythromycin which has antibiotic activity against gram-positive bacteria, as well as other micro-organisms.
