Multi-element filter with automatic cleaning by co-current washing with the fluid to be filtered. Dirty water, for example, enters a number of cylindrical filter elements, and passes through them, leaving its impurities on the inside of the elements. When the pressure drop across the elements reaches a pre-set limit the washing cycle is instigated. This involves linking each element in turn to a flush outlet, so the water passes straight up inside the element, entraining the impurities from the inner wall, and removing them via this outlet. A rotating distributor, turned by the flow of fluid itself, and stopped at intervals by a piston, ensures each element is washed.
