The electrochemical process for the preparation of organic sulphur and selenium compounds from phenols and aromatic amines with the use of electrophilic cations is characterised in that, for generating the electrophilic cations, use is made of an electro-percolation cell (1) which comprises the soluble electrode (7) based on carbon and sulphur or selenium, this electrode, which forms the anode, consisting of a mixture (8) of powder of the two products arranged between two membranes (9a, 9b), preferably of graphite cloth, which make electrical contact possible, the whole being arranged so that the electrophilic cations accumulate in one of the parts (12) of the cell from which they are regularly drawn off to be brought into reaction with a substrate consisting of a phenol or an aromatic amine. <IMAGE>
