The deflector serves as a barrier with simultaneous deflecting, retaining and distribution effects for use in heat and mass exchangers and other devices. It allows an alternating bi-directional operation and offers high efficiency, low gas-dynamic resistance, simplicity and reliability in operation. The gravity self-flapping deflector is designed as a plate (1) with a bearing-supported axle (2), oriented at a preset angle to the geocentric direction. The projection of the plate (1) has at least two axes of symmetry. The bearing-supported axle (2) is parallel to one of the axes of symmetry. The section of plate (1) over the bearing-supported axle (2) has the larger mass. The section of the plate (1) under the bearing-supported axle (2) must comprise at least one retaining and distributing plate (5 and 6) per working surface.<IMAGE>
