<p>A preloader (10) for use in a webbing retractor (12) for retracting an occupant-restraining webbing (24) forcibly onto a takeup shaft (22) at the time of a sudden deceleration of a vehicle. The preloader (10) includes a angular column shaft (26) rotating integrally with the takeup shaft (22); a deformable member (30) disposed around the angular column shaft (26); and a wire (44) connected to the deformable member (30) and wound therearound. The wire (44) is tightly wound around the deformable member (30) at the time of a sudden deceleration of the vehicle, thereby causing the deformable member (30) to undergo deformation and engage with the angular column shaft (26). The angular column shaft (26) is hence rotated integrally with the deformable member (30) so as to positively rotate the takeup shaft (22) in a taking-up direction (R). <IMAGE></p>
