New cyanine comps. of general formula (I) are new; where R1 = H or a lower no. alkyl gp; R2 = an opt. substd. lower no. alkyl gp.; X and Y are independently = CH2 or O; Z = an acidic residual gp.; and n = 2 or 3. The group substd. on R2 is a 1 - 8 C alkoxy gp., -OH, -SO3H, -COOH, a 1-8C alkyl amino gp., a phenolsulphonyl amino gp., a p-methyl phenyl sulphonyl amino ap., an acetyl gp., a 1-3C alkoxy carbonyl or a 1-3C alkoxy 1-3C alkoxy carbonyl gp.. Z is a halogen atom, an alkyl sulphate residual gp., an aryl sulphate residual gp. a perchlorate residual gp., a tetra fluoro borate residual gp., or an aryl carboxylic acid residual gp.; and X and Y are methylene or 0, independently. |
