The present invention relates to a system (1) for enabling the operation of a controlled element (2) comprising means (4, 5, 5a, 6, 7) for recording a consumption credit physically represented by coded information, this credit being consumed in step with the operation of the controlled element (2), and means for preventing the operation of the controlled element (2) when the said credit is completely consumed, the recording means preferably including a slot-shaped housing (4) able to receive a magnetic stripe card on which the said coded information has been written, a passage-type read head (5) and erase head (5a), the latter making it possible, once the recording has taken place, to generate a random erase marking of a few bits on the magnetic track, so as to render the card (C) unusable.
