The recesses (13,14) are provided in a housing (15) for a range of tools (8,8',8'') adapted to be fitted one at a time into the toolholder of a dental hand instrument. Tools having different rotational speeds or speed ranges are distinguished by bar codes on their cylindrical shanks, which are read by optoelectronic sensors installed in a particular recess (13) into which a tool is inserted with shank end first. Binary signals are supplied to an evaluation logic which produces control and/or display signals. At the front of the housing (15) a panel (17) displays images (19,20) of the tool and sleeve with percentage indication (18) of the speed of the drive motor.
