PURPOSE:To obtain a hydrogen storage alloy material combining high equilibrium hydrogen pressure, the high amt. of hydrogen to be occluded and excellent durability for the repetition of absorbing and discharging hydrogen, for Ni in an RENi5 allay (RE denotes rare earths) having a CaCu5 type hexagonal structure, by substituting elements forming intermetallic compounds with Ni or forming solid soln. in the total rate. CONSTITUTION:The hydrogen storage alloy by this invention has a CaCu5 type hexagonal structure as well as contains at least one kind among Y, Ce, Nd, Pr, Sm and Gd and preferably has a compsn. expressed by RE1-XAX(Ni5-YGY)Z. In the above compsn., RE denotes either La, Ce, Nd, Pr or their mixture: Mm or LRM, A denotes at least one kind among Y, Sm and Gd and G is selected respectively from the elements forming intermetallic compounds with Ni or forming solid soln. in the total rate as well as 0<=X<=0.6, 0<Y<=1 and 0.8<=Z<=1.2 are satisfied. Furthermore, preferably, RE denotes LRM, and G denotes at least one kind among B, Al, Sn, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu and Zn.
