An indicator path (2,3) accessible to the gas to be detected via at least one entry position is isolated from the environment. The indicator path is in the form of a direction changing guide which can be helical or meander-shaped. It is mounted on a supporting body (1) and has a cover with sight markings at defined intervals along the path. The markings are in the form of windows or graduations on a transparent plate. An indicator substance for the colorimetric reaction is arranged along the path in variable quantities accessible to the gas.
