PURPOSE:To convert CO2 into organic compounds by supplying CO2 and water to a metal oxide activated so that the positive and negative ions may be locally produced on its surface while irradiating the metal oxide with light energy. CONSTITUTION:For example, the surface of ZnO fine particles are activated by heating so that positive and negative ions may be locally produced. CO2 and water are supplied thereto while irradiating with sun-rays to convert CO2 into organic compounds. The produced organic compounds are HCOOH, HCHO, CH3OH, CH4, C2H6, C3H8, etc. As the above-mentioned ZnO, high-purity crystalline ZnO fine particles formed by direct oxidation of metallic Zn containing impurities in an amount as low as possible are preferable. The pressure of CO2 gas is recommendably about 1 atm and that of H2O gas is recommendably its equilibrium vapor pressure at room temperature. Heating is not required for the reaction and conversion into organic compounds can be carried out at a low cost without requirement of a high-pressure CO2. |
