The testing of serveral rotary parts for a defined dia. involves scanning each part with a light source and detecting and evaluating the light reflected from the parts. The dia. of one part is measured and two sources, each illuminating one half of the part, are switched on. The separation is measured of narrow axial reflection strips formed on the surface of the part and a computation factor formed from the quotient of the dia. and separation. The quotients is used to multiply the values for separation obtained for the other parts. ADVANTAGE - Enables quality control to be applied to each part directly at the point of manufacture on a lathe.
