Gas- and water-tight, multi-sheet insulating glass (I) is claimed, with at least 2 sheets of glass (A and B) and a profile spacer (C), bonded together in such a way as to form an inner and outer interspace. The novelty is that the inner cavity is sealed with PVDC or materials treated with PVDC, in the following manner: (a) the surface of (C) in contact with glass is provided with shaped PVDC (D) which, together with the device which is used to bond A/B and C together, forms a gas- and water-tight seal for the inner cavity, and/or (b) (A) and (B) are closely bonded together at the edges by material made of cellulose or a cellulose deriv. which has been treated with PVDC (E). (D) is PVDC film which is bonded flush with the glass-contacting surface of (C) by means of a PVDC soln., or a PVDC section which is adapted to fit the inner cavity and forms a mechanical seal, e.g. by folding into (C); (E) consists of absorbent paper or cotton strips which are stuck round the edges of (I), e.g. with epoxy adhesive, and then treated with PVDC soln., or a moulded profile which is stuck into the outer cavity, e.g. with epoxy adhesive, so as to fill it completely, and then treated with PVDC soln; (E) is treated with PVDC (aq. PVDC dispersion or a soln. of PVDC in THF-toluene) by brushing, spraying or dipping, followed by evapn. of solvent. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method provides multi-sheet insulating glass in which the inner space is permanently gas- and water-tight, thus preventing condensation due to ingress of water vapour and loss of insulation due to leakage of gas (Ar, SF6, etc.); the seal is relatively simple and inexpensive to produce, using known materials.
