A heating element (78) built into the head (44) of the inlet valve valve is connected by insulated tracks (72, 74) along its stem (48) to sliding contacts (71, 73) on the valve guide (50) which are wired (62, 64) to a heating controller (60) supplied from a battery (70). For cold starting, the heater is switched on (66) so that fuel (80) is injected (54) into the heated region of the inlet (42) near the valve seat (46). USE/ADVANTAGE - On motor vehicles (where operation may be started automatically e.g. by opening of door). Fuel consumption and pollutant emission are reduced esp. during cold starting and warm-up.
