Prepn. of substituted cyclic amidines (I) of formula (II) is claimed: (where R = methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, iso-propyl-, butyl-, iso-butyl-gp., a primary or secondary aminee substituted by satd. or unsatd. alkyl gps., a phenyl- or substituted phenyl-gp; R1 = methyl or ethyl; R2 = H); by reaction of nitriles with diamines in presence of a catalytically-effective sulphur cpd. Nitrile and diamine(s) are reacted in the presence of 0.05-0.5 wt.% gaseous hydrogen sulphide at increased temp. without application of pressure. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used as hardening catalysts in epoxide resin compositions and also as intermediate prods. for pesticides and pharmaceuticals. The desired imidazoline is produced by this process in high yields and purity.
