The control system is adapted for a motor vehicle (2) and a coupled trailer (3) so that the horizontal angular position of the mirror (6) is changed by means of a drive unit (5) in response to changes in the mutual angular position between the vehicle (2) and the trailer (3) detected by airborne signals from a transmitter/receiver device (7,14). The transmitter (7) is positioned at the rear end of the trailer (3) and the receiver (14) is connected to the drive unit (5) of the mirror (6) through a switch (8). This is adapted to cause the drive unit (5) to rotate the mirror (6) through a predetermined angle about the axis (13) upon receiving the signal (8). The field of view is turned to the position so that the driver can still see most of the area along and to the rear of the vehicle.
