Each of the four arms of a rotary clothes airer can be spread open by pulling in the direction of the arrow on a rope which is attached at one end to the top of the mast and is guided over rollers. As the sleeve moves up, a pawl loaded by a spring enters notches along the mast. The pawl is disengaged to collapse the arm by manually turning the cam.
