PURPOSE:To place no restriction on the connection configuration of the terminal by loading a character pattern corresponding to a desired character form a host system when it is judged that the character pattern corresponding to the desired character is not held in the character pattern storage area of the terminal device. CONSTITUTION:When the desired character is outputted on the terminal device 1, it is judged on the side of the host system whether or not the character pattern corresponding to the desired character is held in the character pattern storage area A and when it is judged that the character pattern is not held, the character pattern is loaded in the character pattern storage area 1A from the host system. In this case, all processes are performed by terminal control software, so there is no dependency upon the connection configuration of the host system. Thus, the character pattern can be loaded without depending upon the connection configuration of the terminal device and host system and being limited to the number of characters.
