OPTICAL WAVEGUIDE TYPE DEVICE AND PRODUCTION THEREOF

PURPOSE:To facilitate the efficient and easy coupling of the light from a semiconductor laser in single mode to an optical fiber by changing the sectional shape of the optical waveguide near a light incident end and a light exit end face toward the end of the optical waveguide so that the field diameter thereof is approximated to the field diameter of the optical element to be coupled. CONSTITUTION:Such a material which partially increases the light incident end 21 is diffused onto a substrate 1 having an electrooptical effect to form the optical waveguide 2 having the light incident end 21 and the light exit end face 22. The sectional shape of the optical waveguide 2 near the least either of the light incident end 21 and the light exit end face 22 changes toward the end 20 of the optical waveguide so that the field diameter thereof is approximated to the field diameter of the optical element to be coupled. The coupling loss is lessened to about a half as compared to the case of direct coupling without forming the optical waveguide end where the sectional shape does not gradually change. The optical coupling between the optical devices is easily and highly efficiently executed.
