The desk or chair has the working surface or seat (2) adjusted to suit the user via an adjustment control (10) coupled to a device for measuring the absolute height (A) of the working surface or seat (2) above a reference plane (11) lying between this and the floor. The electrical signal representing the measured height (A) is converted into a value (K) representing the corresponding height of the user for which this is the correct setting. Pref. the converted height value is fed to a visual display allowing the user to effect further adjustment via a manual control element (3) coupled to the adjustment control (10) until his own height is displayed. Alternatively, the user's height is entered via an input device which allows the adjustment to be effected automatically until the converted measured height value corresponds to the entered value. The desk or chair is designed to provide the best working position for each user.
