Flexible abrasive is prepd. by applying an impregnating compsn. contg. an aq. crosslinkable acrylate copolymer or crosslinkable butadiene-styrene copolymer dispersion to a cotton contg. support fabric with an adhesion promoting size chosen from PVA, a water soluble polyacrylate or modified starches in combination with an aq. polyurethane dispersion. The fabric is not desized prior to coating. The size is pref. PVA with a saponification degree of 80-100% 10-15 wt.% (w.r.t. fibres); a starch ether or ester mixed with an aq. polyurethane dispersion or an ammonium or alkali(ne earth)metal salt of a water soluble polyacrylate. All the sizes are used in an amt. of 5-25 pref. 10-15 wt.% (w.r.t. fibres). The impregnating compsn. is applied in an amt. of 5-50, pref. 20-35 wt.%. The abrasive can be prepd. without desizing or washing of the fabric and the abrasive particles have excellent adhesion to the cotton fabric.
