66530-495 The present invention provides in a process of the type where the acrylamide content of acrylamide polymers is reduced by treating these polymers with sulfites the improvement which comprises conducting such treatments in an oxygen free atmosphere whereby there is no subsequent substantial reduction in the RSV of the treated polymer. The invention allows treatment of acrylamide polymers with sulfites while maintaining the floculant properties of the polymers.
