A high-carbon steel wire with a carbon content of 0.7 to 0.9 % is supercooled to effect austenitization, subjected to plastic working at a degree of working of 20 % or above in the temperature range from 500 DEG C to the Ae1 point, and transformed into pearlite without heating to the austenitic region. The size of the pearlite block is 5.0 mu m or less, and a filament with a strength after drawing of 400 kgf/mm<2> or above and a draw ratio of 40 % or above is obtained. It is suitable for automotive tire cord wire.
