PURPOSE:To obtain an electroviscous fluid which has a large ratio of shearing stress to current density and is capable of minimizing consumption of electric power by dispersing chitosan into an electrical insulating liquid. CONSTITUTION:An electroviscous fluid prepared by dispersing chitosan into an electric insulating liquid. The chitosan used is a basic polysaccharide which comprises a large number of bonded glucosamines, obtained by deacetylating chitin, a polysaccharide comprising a large number of bonded N- acetylglucosamines, which is ordinarily obtained from the shell of a crustacean such as a crab or a lobster. This fluid has a current density of as small as about 1/100 of that of an electroviscous fluid using polysodium acrylate as a dispersing phase when the shearing stresses are equal to each other. Therefore it is possible to suppress consumption of electric power and reduce electric current. This fluid consumes less electric power than the conventional one and is useful for a clutch, a shock absorber, an engine mount, a vibrator, an electricity-to-machine interface and the like. |
