The invention provides an apparatus for chemical synthesis comprising a light source, for example, a laser light source; a means for dispensing a chemical reagent onto the solid support; a means for splitting light emanating from the light source into two or more split beams of light; a means for polarizing the beams of light; a means for collimating the polarized light; a ¼-wave plate disposed between the collimating means and the solid support; a means for focusing the polarized light onto the solid support; and a photodetector array.
