PURPOSE:To produce dihydroxybenzene industrially, continuously for a long period of time and safely, by using a platinum-containing catalyst and dehydrogenating cyclobenzenediol in a high-boiling organic solvent suspending the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Cyclobenzenediol is dehydrogenated in a high-boiling solvent (e.g. liquid paraffin or alkylbenzene) suspending a platinum-containing catalyst prepared by supporting platinum metal or a compound thereof on a carrier to give dihydroxybenzene. This method is carried out under normal pressure and when catalytic activity is reduced, the catalyst is partially added or part of the catalyst is successively removed from the system and a new catalyst is added. Consequently, the reaction can be continuously done and the method is industrially advantageous extremely. Dihydroxybenzene (catechol) is useful as a raw material for agricultural chemicals and drugs. |
