A magnetic recording medium comprising a non-magnetic support having provided thereon a magnetic layer comprising ferromagnetic metal particles dispersed in a binder, wherein said ferromagnetic metal particles have a crystalline size of 250 ANGSTROM or less, and said binder comprises (i) a polyurethane resin having an S-containing group which is at least one member selected from the group consisting of -SH, <IMAGE> said polyurethane resin being one which has been synthesized by the use of a polyhydric alcohol, as a crosslinking agent, having at least three hydroxyl groups and has a branched and crosslinked structure, (ii) a vinyl chloride resin containing an -OH group and a polar group which is at least one member selected from the group consisting of -SO3M, -SO4M, -OPO(OM)2, -PO(OM)2, -COOM, -NR2 and -NR3(+) (wherein M represents a hydrogen atom or an alkali metal, and R represents an alkyl group having up to 4 carbon atoms), and (iii) a polyisocyanate compound.
