A combined free and stack-weight fitness apparatus (101) utilizes a combination of free weights (103A, 103B) and stack-weight assemblies (111A, 111B) to provide multi-mode fitness training. The total training resistance is a combination of free-weight resistance and stack-weight resistance transmitted to the barbell by cables (109A, 109B). A pair of overhead cables (115A, 115B), attached to a barbell (102), provide vertical support until a substantial portion of the weight on the barbell is borne by the operator. |
