PURPOSE:To obtain a bright color display of high luminance by providing a phase plate having the twist angle reverse from the twist angle of the liquid crystal layer of the color liquid crystal element on the outer side of the color liquid crystal element. CONSTITUTION:The color liquid crystal element 1 has two sheets of upper and lower transparent substrates 2, 3 and is formed with color filters 4 of three primary colors; R, G, B on the opposite surface of the substrate 3. A black mask 5 is formed between the filters 4. The color filters 4 and the black mask 5 are coated with an org. film 6 consisting of a top coat thereon and a transparent electrode 7 is formed thereon. An oriented film 8 is formed on the electrode 7. Transparent electrodes 9 are formed on the opposite surface of the substrate 2 in correspondence to the filters 4 and an oriented film 10 is formed on the electrodes 9. The upper and lower substrates 2, 3 are circumferentially sealed by a sealing material 11 and a liquid crystal material is sealed in the inside to form a liquid crystal layer 12. An upper polarizing plate 13 is provided on the outer side of the substrate 2 of the liquid crystal element 1 formed in such a manner and the upper phase plate 15, a lower position plate 16 and a lower polarizing plate 14 are provided on the outer side of the substrate 3. |
