PURPOSE:To obtain the title composite material with densified matrix and low porosity by bringing to at least the melting point of silicon a preform composed of a slurry containing silicon carbide, carbon and silicon fiber to make the silicon into a liquid phase followed by pressurization. CONSTITUTION:A preform composed of (A) a slurry containing mixed powder of silicon carbide, carbon and silicon and (B) carbon fiber is calcined at >=1414 deg.C (the melting point of silicon) to form a silicon liquid phase temporarily followed by pressurization, resulting in the densification of the matrix along with reaction between the silicon and carbon at elevated temperatures into silicon carbide, thus giving the objective composite material with the carbon fiber dispersed in a oriented state in the silicon carbide matrix. |
