The invention relates to a device for damping the vibrations of a stay (1) of a bridge (3), comprising a collar which surrounds a section (P), of the said stay, which is a few metres away from the lower end (4), of this stay, which end is anchored into a suitable foundation (3), the rigid structure interposed between the said collar and the said foundation, the said structure being combined with damping (shock-absorption) means. The structure comprises a rigid base (6) and a rigid post (7) mounted at an intermediate point (M) along its length on the said base so as to be able to oscillate angularly about the said point in all directions and, with a limited amplitude, along the direction of its midline, the head of the said post being hitched to the collar and its foot (12) being combined with means (t, l, v) capable of damping its displacements. <IMAGE>
